SERi USER GROUP MINUTES AND PRESENTATIONS, March 19th 2007, Prague

These are tentative meeting notes. If you participated, feel free to edit and add things you think should be covered.

  • (PDF) Jiri Kuthan opened up with his view of SER status. The status update concentrated on the newly coined SLAMP ecosystem (SIP/SER/SEMSi+LAMP) and the motivation for the recent major Ottendorf release. The SLAMP system has been defined as environment for rapid innovation of open communication services using LAMP (Linux+Apache+Mysql+Python/perl) enhanced by SIP-based real communication. The Ottendorf release is bringing in shortened development cycle by introduction of future-proof data model and scripting features, and rock-solid performance to deal with rough Internet environment. Jiri acknowledged recent contributions: BDB (courtesy of Maxim S. and iptego), sqlite contributions (Marek P.), Identity (Gergely K.) and pike-top (Libor C.). Jiri then identified security and database processing as key contribution areas in the near future.
  • (PDF) Greger Teigre presented his perception of the SER community status. Greger mostly concentrated on improvements in communication: coordination of new features, definition of joint goals, risks introduced by affiliation of key contributors with iptelorg, motivation for contributors. There were long debates about boosting the results by having joint goals versus by having healthy diversity in contributions. Greger suggested several procedures to improve transparency of the development process.
  • (PDF) Kai Vehmanen provided an update on Nokia's contributions to the open source SLAMP world. These included an embedded SIP-stack released under LGPL license known as Sofia SIP and application framework called Telepathy. Sofia SIP is fully fledged SIP stack which in addition to RFC3261 supports also STUN, SIMPLEi and array of other supporting protocols. Telepathy is framework for building complex applications using loosely coordinated components communicating with each other using so called D-bus. Telepathy uses sofia-sip for SIP support and is ready-to-use in Nokia's Internet tablets.
  • (PDF) Massimo Brignoli presented mysql's vision of SLAMP use in telecommunication networks. The major focus was on mysql cluster. Massimo highlighted  built-in high-availability and scalability. The presentation suggested that mysql cluster achieves nine-fives reliability and cost-effectiveness. The presenter also suggested that mission-critical applications may use NDB Telecom API which provides a programming interface for high-perfomance database access. • (PDF) Andreas Kock with freenet, ISPi pioneering VoIPi in Germany, presented their vision of residential SIP services. The presented approach was very pragmatic and focused initially on cost-efficiency. Most of the very excited debate focused on charging models for Internet telephony and coordination of numbering space in Germany (with great feedback from ENUM pioneers Richard Schockey and Michael Haberler). Andreas announced ongoing commitment to contribute to SER codebase.
  • (PDF) Stefan Sayer (iptego) provided an update on SIP Express Media Server, SEMS. Stefan highlighted high-performance of SEMS (300 G711 conference channels on a CPU @ 2 GHZ) and capability to introduce new applications quickly by use of Python scripting language. Further new features include better jitter compensation, monitoring, registrar client, pin collection application example and more extensive documentation.
  • (PDF) Bogdan Pintea announced iptego's new SER contribution: a new remote control interface, SASI. This new interface allows for an optimized use of SER by logic implemented in separate application servers. The contribution is going to be relased in less than one month.
  • (PDF) For lack of time, Jan's technical in-depth presentation of Ottendorf features was postponed and a separate meeting was set up
